As a year filled with dramatic twists and turns enters its final chapter Galway United’s need for a Terryland Park win is inestimable.

Finn Harps would have been thinking, going to Bray, that is a game they can win and other teams looking at our result will think it is a great point for us.  Obviously they are a further two points ahead, but all we can do is focus on our own game.   

There have been a wide range of emotions experienced by followers of Galway United throughout this turbulent season but finally, 330 days after their last league win in Terryland Park, joy unconfined greeted Mark Gough’s final whistle on Friday night as Jeff Kenna’s side produced a winning league performance when it was needed most.

Galway United emerged from Saturday night’s tie with Sligo Rovers in The Showgrounds with another valuable point in their bid to escape the drop thanks to Jay O’Shea’s 75th-minute penalty. While United’s unbeaten run has now stretched to six games, this was definitely a case of a point gained rather than two points dropped.

A trip to the banks of the Camac can bring delight or disaster. Galway United experienced the former 16 months ago when Derek Glynn notched a double of rare beauty. That was Galway’s prettiest performance in a half dozen years. Can a comparable display be summoned tomorrow?

Armed with hope and confidence, Galway United will be anxious to maintain the resilience levels that has seen a half-dozen match unbeaten sequence stitched together at such a critical juncture of the campaign.

So there is still scope for Galway United to remain a full-time footballing outfit. That much was proved in Terryland Park on Friday. Suddenly United’s existence is meaningful again. A seven-match unbeaten sequence offers confidence and evidence that the club can prosper in Premier Division company.

Intrigue has been attached to Galway United since the start of 2008, and the next instalment in the Terryland Park tale ought to be interesting on Sunday.
